8/9 Six Week Recap


Here are just a few of the things our 8th and 9th graders have done in the last 6 weeks.

  • Timpanogas Storytelling Festival: Along with many other students, the 8th and 9th graders were able to attend the Timpanogas Storytelling Festival and hear from many renowned and high-class performers.

  • Head of School Hike: They participated in our all-school hike up the beautiful Utah canyons!

  • Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City: The 8th and 9th grade attended a performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream at Utah's own Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City!

  • STEM Festival Field Trip: The students attended a STEM lecture from professional scientists at Thanksgiving Point.

  • Writing Rally: Our school-wide Writing Rally centered on the them, "Words are Power," and the students learned about coming up with ideas, word choice, thought organization, and more, to hone their powerful writing skills.

  • French Round Table: Students in ALL foreign language classes viewed a presentation by the French class to expand their cultural horizons and see what the other foreign language classes were learning. This included student created exhibits, songs, and delicious crepes! Soon it will be the Spanish and German classes turn to host!

  • WWII Planes Field Trip: The 8th and 9th grade took a trip to view some real WWII planes, learned about the experience from an honored WWII veteran, and even got to climb into the cockpit!

  • World Cuisine Wednesday: Our fabulous 8/9 teacher, Amy McLaughlin, takes her students to regular World Cuisine outings. So far they have learned to love falafal and tatziki sauce!

  • Grandparent’s Day: Every year Arches Academy hosts an all-school Grandparents day, where family members and special guests can come see and participate in what their grandchildren are learning and experiencing every day at Arches!

  • Shelly School of Irish Dance Field Trip: In case world cuisine wasn't enough, Mrs. McLaughlin also took the students to this special Irish Dance studio, where they learned about this fun Irish tradition, and even got to learn a few steps!

  • Dr. Jim Siebert- Chief Meteorologist for Fox News: Guest speaker Jim Siebert, chief meteorologist for Fox News, came and gave a lecture to our students about the science and practicalities behind his exciting job.

  • Mason Branning- Chief Writer for the BYUTV show Random Acts: Students also heard a great lecture from Mason Branning, chief writer for BYUTv's "Random Acts." This helped them see additional professional and creative opportunities.
